Feb. 20th, 2008 @ 10:59 pm dystopian vs. utopian

In class we were supposed to discuss the topic mentioned above. We were so excited to debate that we forget to do one of the the most important things, define both of them. We got half way in the discussion before we started trippin each other up. The thing was we started confusing utopian society with the dystopian societies that were supposed to be repesented as utopian. As you can tell it got confusing in the middle and I started to take on a sort of big brother role (Oh I was against Utopian society).  I actually started believeing myself but it was a heated, intricate, and interesting discussing. The bset part of the discussion was when the question was brought up, do we consider our society in the present  dystopian. We all know that there are attempts every day to equalize and perfect or society but are we a dystopian society hoping to achieve utopian status? Are we content with being "dystopian"  if we are because of oour multiple differnces, beliefs, motves and etc. As you can see our debate got to interesting heights so I wlcome anyone else to provide input on any of our discussions. Of course we spoke about other issues but these stuck out most in my memory.

Feb. 19th, 2008 @ 10:15 am 1984-The conclusion
The book 1984 was in my opinion overall a good book. The coclusion though was something that I honestly didn't expect coming straight from reading Fahrenheit 451. I really expected Winston to put up more of a fight or atleast die for what he believes in. For the sake of reading and the enjoyment of reading that type of ending was one that disagreed with whole heartedly. But for the sake of the message behind the literature that was the best possible way it could end. I went ahead and read the whole book at the time when we were supposed to stop when Winston and Julia got caught. I was intrigued that Julia finally got caught and I really though that Winston would atleast provoke the party. There are alot of questions I still have about the book but they might only be questions for the author. I was curious though on why they let Winston live for so long and also why let him live at all. My problem is just that I am a reader that likes to see the protagonist make a statement or do something or atleast die trying. He/she doesnt always have to be the hero but at the climax I would like to see them respond to the adversity differently than Winston and Julia for that sake because after all the stuff that she was talking she disappointed me also. It was a good book but just at the top of my prefered readers list.

Feb. 4th, 2008 @ 11:04 pm My Qoute.
"Listen. The more men you've had, the more I love you. Do you understand that? "  "Yes , perfectly." "I hate purity, I hate goodness. I don't want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be currupt to the bones."

To review the scene, Winston is in a secret garden with his new found lover Julia. She has just shared that she has slept with many men from the party. Winston reveals that the more men she has slept with is the more that he will love her. He then tells her that he hates purity and corruption basically turns him on. It just goes to show that in their society how much perfection and purity is shoved into common thinking. When these things happen people like Wintson, and Julia and many others will revolt. The interest I had in the qoute is that it disgusts him so much that it turns him on a sexual level. I thought it was pretty disgusting when I f irst read it but after remembering to sympathize with the characters it makes sense that something that seems so crazy is possible. Julia's reaction makes situation more believalbe also be she glorifies the fact that she has been with hundreds of party members. She is indeed curropt to the bone. so In essence they are perfect for each other, she is more than tainted and Winston is thrilled about every stain that she has acquired. It not so much about the sex why I chose this qoute but it was more of the notion that drove to the sexual act. After they shared this information and spoke intellectually they became more romantic, he even kissed her differently. He shared more emotion in a few hours than he shared with his wife whom he was with for many months, and for the most part because they both hated the realm in which they lived.

Hey everybody wassup. My name is Lawrence Taylor but all my friends call me LT. I decided to take this course because I like To read and write in my spare time even though I rarely ever have any. I like alot of sports and activities, anything that keeps me busy because I hate sittin still.  TV is cool sometimes but I'd rather go to the movies only cause sometimes when I'm sitting at home there's nothing to watch but i still have 1000 channels.
I am a middle child kind of, I have 2 sisters 1 older 1 younger but my younger sister doesnt live with me. My parents are still together and they are back in New York with my older sister, and the rest of half of my family. I dont really do the myspace and facebook thing cause I dont really want 2 sit around a computer all day cause that stuff is addictive, I know cause all my friends lose their mind when they can't check it. This site is cool though I guess cause its for class.
